The Benefits And Drawbacks Of Overhead Pharmaceutical Clean Room Cranes

Industrial & Manufacturing Blog

When setting up and building a pharmaceutical clean room, you need to use the best equipment that is going to function correctly and dependably. Everything in the room has to be kept spotless, which means that each piece of equipment you add to the room serves a specific purpose and is easy to clean.

One piece of equipment that is highly useful in pharmaceutical clean rooms is overhead clean room cranes. These specialized cranes are specifically made for sterile environments, and they are installed on a track that runs on the ceiling of the room. These types of cranes offer many benefits and a few drawbacks.

Benefits of Overhead Cleanroom Crane

Using an overhead crane in your pharma clean room can offer a wide range of benefits for your general set-up, as well as for everyday operations.

More Floor Space

One of the biggest benefits of installing an overhead crane is that it isn't going to take up any floor space. Clean rooms tend not to be very large, as the entire environment needs to be controlled and kept clean of all contaminants, and thus the floor space comes at a premium. With an overhead crane, you don't have to give up any floor space at all. The track to support the crane will be installed on the ceiling, and the crane will be suspended in the air and move along the track.

If you install a freestanding crane, for example, you will have to dedicate a considerable amount of space for the legs and base of the crane. With an overhead crane, you get the function of a crane without sacrificing floor space, allowing for a more open work environment.

Increased Flexibility

When installing a floor-based crane, with legs and support elements all located on the floor, you have to find a location in the clean room for all that equipment to go where it will not interfere with the other tasks taking place in the cleanroom. You also have to think about how people and things will move around the space and ensure that the freestanding crane will not present a safety hazard to people's movement.

With an overhead crane, you don't have to find open floor space, and you don't have to worry about the support and legs interfering with the free movement of people around the room. As the crane is located overhead, you can locate it exactly where you need it. This will allow you to structure your cleanroom more openly and efficiently regarding where the rest of the equipment in the room goes.

Drawbacks of Overhead Cleanroom Crane

As with just about anything, there are going to be some drawbacks that come with an overhead crane that you need to consider.

Reinforced Ceiling

One of the most significant benefits of an overhead crane is that it is ceiling mounted, but that can also be a drawback. Since it is heavy and mounted to the ceiling, you may need to add additional support to the ceiling area to ensure that your ceiling structure can support the crane's weight.

If you are building a clean room from scratch, you need to include the right ceiling supports to start with. If you are adding an overhead crane to an existing clean room, that may mean some downtime for the clean room as you have to bring in a specialized construction crew to reinforce the ceiling and then deep clean the room to ensure it is free of contaminants.

An overhead crane can be great for your pharmaceutical cleanroom operations as it doesn't take up floor space, allowing for more freedom with your general layout. However, you will have to reinforce the ceiling to ensure it can support the weight, which means a little more time for installation. Once it is in place, though, it will allow easy movement throughout the space.
