Understanding Common Water Issues With An Outdated Boiler

Industrial & Manufacturing Blog

If you live in a home that has an older model boiler system in place for heating and hot water, you should consider yourself lucky. Even though the boiler may be one of the older forms of home heating systems, it is still one that is very efficient and simple in its design. The large pressurized tank holds water that is heated, the produced steam is used for heating, and the heated water is available for use with your water supply. Common issues with older boilers, however, will be related to the water itself. Here are a few of the most common water issues with an outdated boiler system.

Problem: You hear water dripping continuously, but there are no signs of a leak.

Cause and Solution: The tank of the boiler heat system is filled continuously with water. While more modern boilers have a water inlet valve in the base, most older models have a valve that is located at the top. This means if the water inlet seal is starting to deteriorate, you will have a leak, but it will be inside of the tank. The water dripping into water inside of a metal tank can be rather loud, even if the leak itself is not a major issue. To solve the problem, contact a heating services technician, like the ones at Oehlert Bros Inc, to have the seals in the valve replaced.

Problem: You find water leaking from the base of the tank.

Cause and Solution: A leak from your boiler system can be a major problem if it is not caught in time. Make sure the drainage valve at the bottom is not leaking and is tightly turned off. If this is not the problem, you could have a problem with deterioration inside of the tank that has allowed perforation to form. Water that has high levels of minerals and acidic compounds can eat away at the inside of a boiler tank over the years, causing them to break down from the inside out. Unfortunately, this kind of issue may lead to full replacement, but if caught soon enough, you may be able to make a repair that will give you a little more time.

If you are having water issues with your older model boiler heat system, be sure to be attentive about repairs. Prolonging repairs can definitely lead to a lot of problems. Contact heating service professionals for insight and advice with any water issues you have with your home boiler system.
